La scala a chiocciola conduceva al piano sottostante. Un tavolo rotondo, circondato da poltroncine in pelle, ospitava un bouquet di peonie bianche. Ma, ovunque ci si voltasse, scaffali in legno di castagno accoglievano migliaia di libri rilegati in cuoio. Il profumo delle pagine ingiallite dal tempo raccontava una storia vecchia di centinaia di anni.
